And they said that a Hero can save us...

...I'm not going to stand here and wait.

Yeah, I'm quoting Nickleback. Yeah, I hear they're poked at as being terrible now. Because they got to be popular I guess...? That seems to be the trend, isn't it? It's popular now, so it sucks. I dunno... overplay anything and it'll drive you crazy. Whatever, I still like their music... but that's not the point.

I tend to think back a lot to this concept. This "Hero" we're supposed to be waiting for. Part of me just wants to call bullshit on the whole idea. But that's the part of me that's always depressing, so I try to ignore that side when I can. I... seem to be having to do that a lot lately... umm... right... anyways, the other half still sees some kind of validity to the concept. That there CAN and SHOULD be a Hero. Or perhaps Hero"s".

But this waiting around for one to magically appear bullshit? I can't stand that.

I mean... how are we even supposed to know? How do we pick one runner from the lot and declare that this one guy is The One. He's got it all figured out. He's the one to beat this thing. (Or "She" by the way, I'm just using the masculine term for simplicity here.) Just what the fuck exactly is supposed to set this one person apart from the rest of us? What are we looking for? What's so special about this one guy? Why does he get to be the special one? What the fuck is taking so long for him to appear?

It's all just one big circle jerk of questions with no answers. It's pointless.

The fact of the matter is that no one is special. There is no great and powerful Chosen One coming to save us all. It's just us. We're all we've got. And we're all the same. We're the ones who will have to make that final stand or die trying. Quicker we come to grips with that the better.

Though, I suppose that isn't to say you can't look up to people. You can't look at a person and say "They're the Hero." or at least "They're MY Hero." It's always good to have someone to believe in... though it makes it harder on you when that person falls. Still, worth it while it lasts.

And I guess there is someone I've viewed for a while now as having that potential. That I'd look at and go "That's the Hero. It's Them. Always has been." Not gonna throw out names though. People have big enough targets on their heads without me painting bigger marks on them with fucking "Titles" or some other shit like that. So I'll just say, "Yeah, there's this guy I think could do it." End of story.

But there's one persistent problem. My Hero doesn't fight. He can't fight. And I'm pretty sure I know why. If we're gonna go along the line with this storytelling bullshit, then there's a very important element missing from the Hero equation. In order for the Hero to slay the Dragon... he needs a Sword.

And that's kind of always been our problem. It's not that we don't have anyone willing to stand up and fight. It's that the Hero doesn't have a Weapon...

  1. When I heard about this /hero/ thing I figured one of three things had to be the case.

    1. It's bullshit.
    2. Master crushed it under heel shortly after it's birth.
    3. It's a proxy.

My money is on three. If /hero/ does exist, I'd bet one master is using it to hurt the others.

    1. I've considered #3 before...

      ...it's always number three, isn't it? -.-;

Ahem, but yeah... there've been a few of those I've thought could fit the bill actually.

  2. But what if the hero was created to keep the rest of us down, so we didn't rebel to our fullest. And the best heroes come from those downtrodden who fight only in the most dire times.

    1. Possible. Hence my stance to ignore the idea of a singular hero. There are no "Chosen Ones", only stubborn bastards who refuse to give up.

    2. Well we have plenty of those, don't we

    3. If there were more the world would probably be insufferable, as we would never get anything done, due to stubbornness and arrogance, I need to sleep almost 12 hours on a plane does man no good.

  4. Ya gotta give the Hero a REASON. The Weapon normally isn't the problem.

    1. A reason is similarly important.
I'm not sure what weapon you're implying they use though...

    2. There are several weapons floating around. The motivation to go up against big man Slender or his family is, well, lacking.

So I stand by my point.

  5. *Long ass sigh*

So... you're gonna give you're hero a pony?

    1. Your Hero*.

I pride myself on being a bitch about these things.

    2. Also, double posting because relevant: People should really stop holding that pony shit against him. At least he was fucking creative enough to try. How many people who read this blog can say they had enough courage to try something that ballsy?

Courage IS being stupid. FOR GOOD REASONS.

Continuously giving him shit about it is ignorant and wrong. So kindly shut the fuck up, people. Not just North.

    3. Heh... almost don't feel I need to reply to this now.
But just to poke fun? Yeah... sure. I'd give them a pony. Not to use as a weapon though... mostly just because their reaction would amuse the hell out of me.

I think I see the real problem here though... so don't worry North, if we ever meet, I'll be sure to give you some ponies to play with. I don't want you to feel left out.

    4. Yeah, sorry for the misspelling.

And I will never drop the pony thing.

      NEVER.

...I think I was interpreting her a bit more broadly than I probably should have been. But I do that.

  7. I always used to figure the Hero would be Zeke. He seemed invincible, right up until the end.

    1. He really wasn't though... the cracks in his armor were visible for anyone to see. He almost gave up once even. He wasn't perfect or invincible by any means.

But... that's why I liked him. Because he fought back anyways, in spite of it all.

    2. Invincible may have been the wrong word to use, now that I actually take a moment to sit back and think about it. I guess I just figured if anything was going to kill him, it would be the Construct, not Wren.

For some reason I'm glad the big guy didn't get his last laugh on Zeke. Seems kind of fitting.

  8. I thought all that 'Hero' and 'Sage' stuff was part of the Core Theory... which nobody ended up being happy with because of how badly in failed.
I mean, I haven't looked into it for a while, so I could be remembering wrong... but I've got a hunch that 'telling a story' just isn't going to work for us.

    People always remember good stories.

    1. I suppose it was. But certain elements seem to have always hung around... I mean, we've still got Sages somehow. I view "The Hero" as something of a universal element though... You're fighting a monster... anyone who chooses to stand above the rest and fight back, that's a hero, right?

I dunno. I could be grasping at straws again. Overall, my belief still stands that anyone could be that hero. As does my belief that none shall ever truly rise until we have a means of actually harming the Construct.

  9. Is there even a weapon to kill it with? Maybe, but lets start with hurting the son of a bitch first.

    1. Non-lethal damage that'll just serve to make Tall, Pale and Faceless mad? At best temporarily inconveniencing Our Mutual Tallish Friend?
      That'll never backfire.

      Delete
    2. I've heard of one... at least one... but it was destroyed.

I imagine any weapons which may have once existed and were capable of harming the Construct have been similarly eliminated... or simply lost to the hands of time.

Though lately I've been considering the idea that a new weapon could be "forged." I'm just... not really sure how.

  10. Swords are easy to make. I know a guy who specializes in them.

But it takes more than a sword and a guy with some balls.

    1. Then what would you suggest, Nick darling?

    2. Page theory. Figure out a way to edit the book.

    3. I thought I recalled you knowing such a person... but I'm imaging it'll take more than just a sword to do the trick. And I'm also guessing you can't just make magical swords on the fly. XP Gotta be something more to it than that...

However, on your point... yeah... you're probably on the right track there. Perhaps then if the two elements were combined? A weapon that could rewrite the book? Ha... sounds kind of silly written down. Okay, maybe keep those a bit separate... buuuut if perceptions could be wielded against the Construct like you would suggest with Page Theory... couldn't it similarly apply strength to a proper weapon?

      Delete
    4. Sagel tried that. He called it "The heel." It didn't work.

Magic is complicated. And for better or for worse, what you seek is in that realm. There is no science that will build you a mythic weapon.

Are you sure it's what you want?

      Delete
    5. Huh... I thought Reach was the one with the Heel... Ugh, everything's just running together these days.

I'm not entirely sure. But honestly? I'd have to lean in the direction of "yes."

Perhaps because I would hold there to be a scientific equivalent to any form of what you would call magic. I'm probably getting a bit too "meta" here, but... just to make an example... Say you dropped the Tardis in the middle of Hogwarts. Most likely, the wizards there would perceive the Doctor's blue box as a form of magical artifact. His ability to regenerate as a form of spell. Likewise, the Doctor would most likely perceive the magical abilities of those around him as something he's more familiar with... so he'd probably attribute their abilities to a form of psychic manifestation; magical artifacts as advanced (possibly alien) technology.

Everything leads back to perception... to how the mind sees things. So as I see it, the powers we're dealing with when we evoke concepts such as Page Theory are just as much scientific as they are magical. Which you see it more as simply depends upon your point of view.

  11. In.

    In.

Information. Information theory. The quantification of information. All that we know boiled down to a single point, an edge sharp enough to cut through the lies and obfuscation. Sharp enough to cut a god.

Can you forge a weapon of information? A weapon to fight entropy, to fight uncertainty. We can see the Slender Man or we can fight him, but we cannot do both. Uncertainty. He degrades our information, he is the entropy in the system. S = k log w.

Where we do begin? How can we cut him out of the world? How?

You didn't take a blow to the head for fucks sake, you got stabbed in the chest! Even after surgery you should not be behaving this incoherently. It's been days man!
